But even at the times that LP was 'the standard', it was not by definition the best. E.g. LP describes fewer places more in depth, compared to Rough guide that tends to describe more places. What is better is open for debate and largely depends on your travel style and preferences. But I am too old to use their hostel recommendations, and other guides do a better job of showing (DK) or talking about (RS) the reasons to visit a place. RS is better for my life stage for hotels and restaurants,. ... Depends on your destination. Happy travels.I tend to like guides that have maps and photos in them and not just pure text. Some ppl prefer more text but I'm more of a visual person. To help, I detail the top 15 must-have travel guidebook series, from trusted classics to niche favorites. I break down their pros, cons, and standout features to help you decide which is best for your next trip. From our early days of travel, one of the heaviest parts of backpacking around the world used to be shouldering the weight of hefty printed guidebooks as we made our way from one country to another. We often carried four or five at a time. This heavy stack included guides for where we were, where we had been, and, if organized—where we were going next.We did this because, at the time, we had no other choice. Before all the options we have today, old-school travel guidebooks provided the only source of travel information available. However, now that so much information is just a few clicks away, you might wonder if travel guidebooks still hold any value. Here’s my answer: As an experienced traveler who uses all the online resources, from AI planners to TikTok clips and blog articles, guidebooks are still an essential travel planning tool for adventurers worldwide.

Tyler Cowen spends, on average, 160 days on the road. He once got caught up in a gunfight in Rio. This is not your typical travel guide.
My name is Tyler Cowen, and I’m a travel addict. Over the last 40 years I’ve visited more than 100 countries. I spend, on average, 160 days on the road. I have lived in a tiny Mexican village without shops, have been to Haiti five times, and once got caught up in a gunfight in Rio. Which is another way of saying: I’m not your typical vacation guide.“In travel, our greatest enemies are inertia and status quo bias,” writes Tyler Cowen. (Photos via Getty and Alamy) I spend, on average, 160 days on the road. I once got caught up in a gunfight in Rio. I’m not your typical guide. As an economist, I’ve never been much of one for spouting conventional wisdom, and as a traveler, I generally take the same approach. I’m always on the hunt for the places, the art, the food that most tourists overlook—and because I’ve spent so much of my life traveling, I know where to find them.To be a Tyler Cowen-style traveler, you have to be a little more adventurous than your fellow tourist. Maybe this is the summer when you decide you’re ready for that.
